Hello there, I bet you are searching for smartphone photography and Google lead the way here on my blog. This post is not an academic essay about smartphone photography but it is more likely describing smartphone photography based on my personal perspective. I made it as simple as possible so that everyone new and willing to explore the world of smartphone photography can understand. Let's make a good discussion as I need much feedback on this subject.
We have the same interest about smartphone photography for several reasons. To me I'm interested on smartphone photography because I carry smartphone all the time therefore I can take photos at anytime I desire. That's one reason. The quality of photos taken from smartphone is still on the tolerance range of my satisfaction or in other words it is still good enough to me. That's two. The last reason is because price of smartphone is considered affordable for a gadget with multifunction compared to DSLR camera which only has single function.
In order to convince myself about the promising future of smartphone photography I did some research on the internet. Here are the result :
1. More people taking photos using smartphone.
An article published by the CEA mentioned that people using smartphone to take photos are increasing 22% within 2 years. Which means that the number of people enjoying taking photos with their smartphone are continuously increasing. And based on that research most of the respondents use smartphone to take photos because they carry smartphone all the time. You can find the link to the research report here. People like me and those respondents love spontaneous event and smartphone help us to capture it almost instantly. If you have the same perspective as me and those respondents then we are on the same track.
2. Smartphone photography still lack on quality.
Unfortunately 95% of opinions from friends, on social network and on the internet say that the quality of smartphone photography is low compared to the quality of photos taken from DSLR camera. They say that the reputation of smartphone photography is incomparable to DSLR.
3. Smartphone has replaced pocket camera.
I found an interesting article written by Ken Yeung, a contributor of The Next Web. He studied preference of people on taking photos between smartphone, pocket camera and DSLR camera. Based on his research, people prefer smartphone compared to pocket camera due to its functionality and quality. But DSLR camera is still the most wanted gadget to consider when taking photos with high quality.
4. More important people are admiring the result of smartphone photography.
Jim Richardson, Professional Photographer at National Geographic published several astonishing photographs of Scotland landscapes in Instagram on 7 Ocotber 2013 which were taken by Iphone 5S. He wrote a comment "With intense use (I’ve made about 4,000 pictures in the last four days) I’ve discovered that the iPhone 5S is a very capable camera.". You can read his full article here.
Phillip Schiller, Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing at Apple Inc tweeted on 7 October 2013 about the terminology of IPHONEOGRAPHY which refer to smartphone photography using Iphone.
5. Communities of smartphone photography are growing.
With the presence of instagram there is no doubt that communities using smartphone photography are growing. People are sharing more photos taken from smartphone on the internet. Besides instagram, I follow several communities on Google+ which provides space to discuss and share about specific topic of smartphone photography, android photography or iphone photography.
When I first I joined the group, there are only hundreds of member. But by time the members are continue to grow rapidly reaching tens of thousands now. More and more people will join the group as smartphone photography is a growing trend.
6. Marketplace for smartphone photography
What do you think?
Foap and scoopshot are two available marketplace for smartphone photography that provide services for photographer to meet potential users from companies or individuals who are willing to pay for their photos. I joined both marketplace. To me, smartphone photography is a growing trend and will be a completely different subject to DSLR. There will be an intersection between DSLR and smartphone photography on some part. But the potential of smartphone photography is an interesting world to discover and explore.
